balikids12 October, 2007, Bali: On Friday night starting at around 7:30 PM, different kind of crowds from the usual weekend partygoers lining up to get in the door. The crowd peaked at around two hundred people, made up of members of the surfing community, media, and supporters of the Bali Kids to help raise money for a worthy cause, the needy kids of Bali, and specifically the Bali Kids non-profit organization who provide free medical and education for orphanages in Bali.

balikids2At the end of the night, Billy Boen from Oakley handed a check for Rp 19,435,000 to Brenton Whittaker from Bali Kids, money collected from dinner ticket sales and the proceeds from the live auction and the silent auction thus far. Certainly more will be coming in during the next week as promises are fulfilled and other silent auction from Oakley Original Memorabilia; Lance Armstrong autographed poster and signature eyewear, Rick Kelly autographed caps, Shaun White autographed flag and signature eyewear are still waiting for the best bid result at www.oakleyindonesia.com until november 30, 2007.

balikids3The evening began with a video detailing the Bali Kids organization and showing the work that they do in detail. This was then followed by a short speech by Brenton Whittaker of Bali Kids, then an introduction to the event and how it transpired by Oakley General Manager Billy Boen. At the end of his speech he introduced the man who had the idea to have a charity surf contest and dinner to raise money for needy kids, the owner of Villa Mana and first sponsor of the Surf For Bali Kids surf contest, Ben Falloon.

balikids4Ben described his experience as a villa owner in Bali and how it led to him getting a deep appreciation for Bali and its people, which motivated him to find a way to give something back. And being a surfer, he figured it would be best to start in the surfing community. “I’m just stoked to be in a position to be able to do something to help the people here, and knowing that there is an organization like Bali Kids that is making such a difference in the lives of the needy children here, gives me the desire to do all I can to raise some money for them,” said Ben.

balikids5After Ben was finished, two of the girls from Bali Kids got up and did a Balinese dance, and later were joined by the rest of the kids to sing a song. When they left the state, the MC announced that the food was ready so everybody headed for the buffet line to get some food to join the free flow drinks that had been going down like water since they got there! As dinner was wrapping up the live action started, with the jewelry made by the Bali Kids getting a lot of attention from by Chandra (Rizal Tanjung’s wife), and special guest celeb Brad Gerlach buying one to take home also.

balikids6A great time was had by all and it was a memorable night for the Bali community, and hopefully this will set a trend for more similar charity events put on by the surfing industry in Indonesia.
